Today students had the opportunity to brainstorm some ideas for their Valentine mailbox. Mrs. Watanuki and I showed them some examples of other designs created by 4th grade students.
Students came up with a list of what they wanted to be sure to include in their mailbox (besides the parameters given by the teachers.) Then they were asked to imagine at least 2 or more ideas. They could either write out the ideas or sketch the ideas. It was their choice because as we explained everyone does their most productive work in different ways.
Peer feedback was next...they partnered up with a classmate and each had 2 minutes to explain their different design ideas to them. Then they switched off and the other student had an opportunity to share their ideas. During this time students could ask their classmate questions about the design.
Finally, students had time to sketch a labeled diagram of the design they chose to execute. They made list of possible items they would need for their design.
Please find several youtube videos about simple machines posted here. I asked the students to take some time at home to watch them in order to help them execute some of their ideas.
Thanks to all who have sent in supplies/recyclables. All materials needed for students' designs need to be brought to school by Friday, Feb. 10th.
