We are having some interesting discussions as we read through Chapter 5 covering European Explorers in History Alive. Students are intrigued by the adventures of the explorers. It is really astonishing to some of them that many of these people had no idea about the "new world," its vast land, and the fact that "Florida" wasn't always Florida the state.
As we began our study I told the class that there is a good amount of information shared in their textbooks.
These are the 4 questions students should be able to answer about each explorer:
We are skipping around in the chapter so we can group the explorers by the European country they were sponsored by and hopefully this will help students when committing these explorers to memory. Because of our rich discussion and exploring maps and Google earth maps to show some of the routes taken by Columbus and Juan Ponce de Leon, we did not complete the Spanish explorers as planned today. We will finish up with those explorers tomorrow. I asked the students to please reread the sections covering Columbus and de Leon in the book to a parent or a sibling, to share some of the interesting facts we learned today.
Also, I told students that this assessment will not be open book or open note as we have had with our other assessments this year. The Ch. 5 test will be given on Friday, February 10th. Flash cards will come home this Friday, February 3rd. There will be a Quizzizz to help review and study, that will be shared after we have read through chapter 5.
We will begin a project in the LMC with Mrs. Brown about explorers that the students will really enjoy and will be excited to share with you! Look for information in the future on this project (It is completed here at school only.)
If you have any questions please feel free to contact me!
As we began our study I told the class that there is a good amount of information shared in their textbooks.
These are the 4 questions students should be able to answer about each explorer:
- Who sponsored the explorer?
- Which route(s) did they take?
- What was their motivation? (Why did they explore?)
- Explorer's impact- What happened as a result of their exploration? i.e.: gold, riches, new land for their sponsor, war, new foods or products?
